I ask because an AC officer came and said that even if he is only out for 10 minutes I must have a dog house if he goes outside??? I checked the local and state animal code and it says 'provide shelter' and he lives in my house and only goes out to play or bathroom???

No he was literally outside for about 10 minutes, he wasn't barking though he was whining at the door to come in. I checked city code it says 'must provide shelter' it doesnt say anything but that.

If the dog lives outside you would have to provide a doghouse for shelter but since the dog lives in your house that's just silly. The officer is misinformed. Perhaps it would be better if you stay out with your dog while s/he is relieving itself. That should solve the problem with neighbors who think the dog is just being left outside all day. In the below zero weather that some areas of the US are having right now it is cruel to leave the animal out there alone. If you are getting too cold so is the animal.

I have never heard of this. :| If the dog lives in your house, that is providing shelter for the animal. Are you also going to get into trouble if you take the dog for a walk outside? Sheesh

My dog is an inside dog & only goes outside to potty & play when I am outside & we dont have a dog house either. I have never heard of that rule before, but hey there are alot of stupid rules I havent heard of! If you have room for a dog house I would just get a cheap one form Walmart or something & just sit it outside so they cant say anything to you. But other than that I dont know what to tell you. Sorry...I hope this helps! Good Luck :)

I dont think so,, thats the most stupidest thing I heard.
Cause dog kennels in the winter dont even keep him warm.
If your dog wants to come in then let it(which I bet you do). that the oly way to tell if her wants to come in, getting a dog house that he dosnet use would be stupid. Unless he plays outside in the summer time and would like a place to lay down outside in the shade? but I wont get a dog house cause he is more of a inside like you said.
I would call the AC office and tell them that there report was stupid

I think your house should be considered shelter, but I don't want to get you in trouble. Maybe you should install a doggie door that can be locked when you don't want him to go outside. Call the city code enforcement office and ask them about the situation.

I suppose that this could be specific to your area. I know where I am, it's not required for dogs that are generally indoor pets. Maybe it's stated with the possibility that if you happen to "forget" your dog is out and leave the house, that you should have a place for your dog to get out of the elements just in case.

If your local law requires this, you may need to comply.

You only need to provide shelter if the dog will be outside for an extended period of time.

I've never heard of such a thing. I know that if a dog is kept mainly outside, shelter has to be provided.

Some dumb twit must have reported you. I don't think that you would have a problem verifying that your dog had "shelter", even if they tried to give you a fine!

I have just been served a warrant for my kitty "trespassing" in my neighbor's yard. No sheet!
