The terms spay and neuter refer to a process commonly called "fixing" when it comes to animals. Both are surgical procedures most commonly performed on cats and dogs (although I'm sure other animals can be spayed or neutered, as well) that you would like to prevent from becoming pregnant, and overpopulating the world with more homeless animals.
In males, the testicles would be removed; in females, you would have an ovariohysterectomy, or the removal of the uterus and ovaries. The term neuter refers to males, and spay refers to females. After the surgery, many pet owners report that males are far more affectionate, social, and gentle. In cats, they spray far less, and have far less agression problems. With females, the biggest attraction is not going into heat (which can have health benefits all by itself), and not having to deal with large litters of animals to place in homes.
Most commonly, the procedure is performed on cats and dogs, as those two tend to be the biggest "problem animals" when it comes to overpopulation (take a look at animal shelters across the US and anyone would understand).

To spay is for the female and to neuter is for the male so that they don't make more babies. If not neutered, the male cat will spray urine all over the house and it really smells bad! Get him neutered right away. The female won't be going into heat anymore and things will be much more pleasant in the house. If you don't get here spayed I can asure you that she will find away outside. Please get them both "fixed" I'd make sure the Male got the neuter first before the spraying starts. Maybe your Vet will work something out with payments sense you have two cats.

Spayed is removing the female reproductive organs from an animal usually the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes

Neutering is the removal of the male reproductive organs-testicles.

Both surgeries are done while the animal is under general anesthesia. Believe it or not they recover quickly are raring to go and often its hard to keep them quiet.

To Wife and Mom, Neutering is not the same as a vasectomy-vasectomy does not remove the testicles, the vas deferens is cut to prevent the sperm from mixing with the semen (does not necessarily contain sperm)

Spaying is not the same as a woman having her tubes ties-hysterectomy is a closer comparison.

Have your pet spayed or neutered, it makes for a better pet for you.

To Savingcat-she deserves to have pets as much as you or anyone. She is asking questions to become informed . Leave her alone!!

Spaying a female cat will remove the female's "GIRL PARTS" and stop them from going into heat (having a period). Neutering a male cat is removing their testicles (Balls). Take them to a vet around 12 weeks -4 months and the vet will take care of the details. It is a surgical procedure but is usually done and cat can come home same day or the cat can come home the next day.

Female dogs and cats are spayed by removing their reproductive organs, and male dogs and cats are neutered by removing their testicles. In both cases the operation is performed while the pet is under anesthesia. Depending on your pet's age, size, and health, he or she will stay at your veterinarian's office for a few hours or a few days. Depending upon the procedure, your pet may need stitches removed after a few days. Your veterinarian can fully explain spay and neuter procedures to you and discuss with you the best age at which to sterilize your pet.

Hi Sarah...Spaying is the removal of the female's uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries where neutering involves tying male cat's vas deferen's and the testicles removed. Both are surgical procedures done under anesthesia in order to remove the reproductive organs so that an animal can no longer pro-create (have babies).

Think of it this way...Neutering a male is like a human male having a vasectomy and spaying a female is like a human woman having her tubes tied. Did that help? It's very important to the health and wellbeing of dogs. Dogs can be spayed or neutered at about 6 months of age and a vet has to do it. Just call your vet's office and they can explain it in detail.

Spay is when they give a female animal a histerectomy. Neuter is when they snip the tubes on male dog testicles. This prevents the dogs from getting pregnant and overpopulating.

When a female animal gets "fixed" (so that the can no longer be able to have babies) it's called getting spayed.

When it's the male getting "fixed" it's being neutered.

Spaying and neutering makes it so the dogs dont have pups. The animals are given an operation that makes it so they cant have any puppies.
