if he drinks, get him a really nice engraved flask.
if he smokes, get him an engraved lighter.
if he has no vices, simply spend a day with him (probably his b-day) just doing everything that he wants to do. Too many people underestimate just a day in the company of those you love most, doting on them. And the flask and the lighter are great personal gifts...

My girlfriend's family got her dad a stereo that has an actual old-school record player on it. He had a bunch of old vinyl albums that he'd never thrown away and now he can listen to them again. Plus it's a new product so it also has a CD player on it.
Not sure what the brand is, but I know it wasn't all that expensive. If your dad digs music and still has some of his old records it would be a cool gift.
