I'm doing a project for my photo journalism class and I need to know what type of camera equipment the paparazzi use for it.

The best of the long range zoom type I would say. I've seen them shooting from all kinds of places but don't know the brands.
If you can't find out here go to the best camera store in your area and ask or call one of the stores in Los Angeles. Don't forget to ask what attachments they use too.

They're for traffic monitoring. The purpose is to feed traffic information back to the control centre to highlight slow moving traffic (i.e. traffic jams), and then to relay this information via various multimedia products. That's where the info comes from when your local radio, for instance, says that "traffic is very heavy at such-and-such"
