Hi there...prices will vary depending on where you reside. Veterinary clinics are higher than the local humane societies/shelters. Most shelters worldwide will offer low fee (even free) spay/neuter.
USA residents can locate a participating nearby spay/neuter clinic from the following website: http://www.petsandanimals.org/spayneuter_services.html or http://spayusa.org
[edit] some clinics may not spay while a cat is in heat, however there are some that may so you will need to call in advance.

Go to the animal shelter on euthanasia day and help them hold down a litter of newborn kittens while they shoot poison into their veins, then have a peek in the freezer where they keep the bodies of all the other cats and kittens who were put to sleep because there weren't enough homes for them. Multiply that grief by about four million and you'll have an idea of the pet overpopulation problem just in the USA alone. I wonder if you'll still think spaying is such a cruel practice after that. **Added** If you have a "big forest or something" where you'd like to keep all the world's cats then by all means go ahead. There are thousands of rescues and sanctuaries but thus far the rate of cat reproduction has far outstripped our means of providing for them. But really, if you have the financial and physical means to support 4 million cats then please let me know! Just keep in mind that without spaying/neutering, those 4 million cats will turn into over a billion cats within six years. But that shouldn't be a problem if you have a big enough forest, right? Your people analogy is completely ridiculous. First of all, unlike humans, cats don't have a choice when it comes to reproduction. It is pure instinct, and they will breed and breed and breed until they can't do it anymore. When was the last time you heard about a cat deciding to have fewer kittens because they couldn't afford to look after them? Uh, never. Secondly, people in Mexico are not being euthanized by the millions because they have nowhere to live, are they?

I live in Oklahoma. You really must call around, I've found spays from $65 - $100 and neuter from $45 - $95.
I called my normal vet last week and they had a special for one day. Spays for $35 and neuters for $25. I took advantage of that.
Most vets have a spay day or week the end of Feb. The spays at my vet will be $35 and neuters for $25.
Good luck, but definitely call around.

They should be spayed to protect newborns from people \8 million cats are killed every year just for being born. Doesn't matter what things were 'made' to do or why they were made, by nature as unfortunately this is a human dominated world and human rules So the bottom line is if you do care about these animals and want to see less suffering and abuse then you get them spayed, end of story Every day in the US, 100,000 people are born and 700,000 cats and that's with the spaying that goes on Do the math if you are able to

The price is going to depend on your area.
Where I live the average price for a male cat is $50 and a female usually runs anywhere from $100 to $200.
You could call around to the Vets and shelters in your area to get prices..also some shelters have low cost spay/neuter clincs a few times a year.
Ask friends and family what Vet they use.
Price shouldn't be the only factor in choosing a Vet.
The care , compassion, skill and knowledge shown by the Vet should be the deciding factor.

Call your local Humane Society. They typically spay/neuter for a lot less than the veterinary offices and for routine things like shots and spaying, etc. They are fine. The Humane Society here in Jacksonville only charges $62 for a spay and that includes shots and the office visit.

Call the vet and ask. Prices vary. The procedure itself for a male can range from $60-90 and for a female from $80-130 (on average). This does not include the vets mandatory must have for surgery (if any). Some require for the FDRC to be UTD, rabies vaccines, stool checks or maybe even bloodwork.
The sooner you have them altered, the better!! call the vet immediately for prices!

A female in heat CAN be spayed - although more risky for bleeding, I have never seen an in heat cat have difficulty.

I hate to sound repetitive, but it really depends on your demographic area. I live in the rural South, so it's pretty reasonable. It only cost 30 bucks to have my bobcat neutered, and an additional 10 for a rabies shot. Just shop around and get the best price. Good luck!
