Being very small, I always sat on the crossbar and got lifts home from various members of our gang inside the sixties... it felt safer too, encircled inside strong arms. Ah, those were the days... just a teen and always offered crossbar rides home, until, one day, the tiny mouse called Brownie, that this tomboy carried in my sweater, that went everywhere I went, even to my school, as it ran across my arms and chest and made me feel untouchable outside, this bullied child at home, "if it happens to you, it happens to me, because we are friends forever", bounced out from his safe hiding place and disappeared beneath a hump back bridge in the darkness of the night... it broke my childish heart.

Can't think of a crossbar ride now, even in my sixties, without recalling Brownie, sigh:-)

A "backie" is where you take a passenger on the saddle. A "croggy" is where you take a passenger on the crossbar

When I was a kid in Australia, it was referred to as giving someone a "dinky". Don't know what it's called in the UK though, sorry!
