I have an old beagle 13 yrs + I have noticed she seems to be in pain lately. Her stools have been very loose and she has not been eating well. She also has a very bad odor, (GAS?). When she has pain she arches her back and walks around several seconds until the discomfort lessens. Could this be worms or something more serious? Thanks

It is probably old age. Take your baby to the vet and see if she has some serious medical problem, if it can be fixed and you are willing to dig deep in your pocket to fix it, go for it, but at that age she's probably close to headin to doggie heaven, do the kind thing and don't keep her around if she's hurting just so you can still have your friend.

My heart goes out to you. My terrier mix is 16 this year and has all kinds of old age symptoms. It could be that the pain is gas pain. DO NOT change her food around. Having to digest something new and unknown is not a good idea unless it is some specific type of prescription dog food. Do take her to the Vet though and they can tell you what is happening for sure and you will at least have the comfort to know what to do next. If it is something simple...like digestive problems...then they will be able to help. If it's more serious they will let you know how to proceed. I feel your pain. Gee, I can't even talk about the idea without getting teary eyed.
Also get her an old pillow to sleep on. Her bones may be aching. God bless.

At 13 yrs, the arching of the back as a pain reaction is not good. Take this dog to a vet. (Do NOT treat for worms unless the presence of worms is verified by a stool sample in an old dog.)

Hi
I have a 12 year old beagle. She has arthiristis. I don't think she has worms.. but you should take her to the vet.

My dogs often arch their back when they are injured. Sometimes dogs injure their backs when they jump. It could be a disk problem. There are anti inflamatory drugs available. However you need to be aware of the side affects.

My beagle was so lame she could not walk more than 2 feet. I took her to the vet and my husband and I were concerned that the vet would suggest we put her down. He gave her a shot of anti inflamatory medicine and also some anti inflamatory pills.

In addition to the anti inflamatory pills I started giving her 1000 mg of vitamin C a day. The first week she couldn't walk if she missed her pill.

However 2 weeks later I went to visit my daughter and told my husband to make sure he gives the beagle her meds everyday.

I came home and the dog was fine walking around etc... but I noticed I still had a lot of pills left. My husband forgot to give them to her. (MEN!)

Anyway she walks fine now and all I am giving her is vitamin C.

If your beagle is shivering it is in pain (Mine was shivering constantly)

Take her to the vet but also give her Vitamin C... it is wonderful. I will post a site that you can read about it.

I give my dogs regular vitamin C in a dollop of cream cheese.

Good Luck

VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can reduce cancer risk, boost the immune system, stimulate wound repair, and reduce the risk of cataracts. Vitamin C is important for proper bone formation and the maintenance and plays a role in preventing heart disease. We also know that when a dog is stressed they need additional vitamins for their body to function properly and to protect it from disease.

There is an assumption among conventional veterinarians that because dogs manufacture a little of their own vitamin C there is no need to supplement it. However, holistic veterinarians have found that supplementing vitamin C in a dog's diet can clear up a variety of health problems. In my own case my Lucy had lots of hot spots that bothered her. A few days of Ester C and they cleared up.

Dr. Wendell Belfield points out in his book, "How to Have a Healthier Dog", "Fifteen years of clinical experience, involving over two thousand cases, has told me that dogs definitely benefit from extra vitamin C. When given supplements, they are much less likely to develop hip dysphasia, spinal myelopathy, ruptured discs, viral diseases, and skin problems. They live healthier and longer."

When supplementing vitamin C, use sodium ascorbate or some other form of buffered vitamin C because plain ascorbic acid may cause an upset stomach. The best is Ester C You can buy it in powder or tablet form and add it to your dog's food, or get it in a multivitamin. If they spit it out you can wrap it in a very small amount of cheese or a little piece of meat. The daily dosage for an adult dog is the following:

DOSAGE
Small dogs: 500 mg
Medium to large dogs: 1,000 mg to 1,500 mg
Giant dogs: 2,000 mg

It it a possibility that it's worms, but it could be something much more serious such as cancer. She probably has arthritis, too. Having a bad odor is never a good sign. It usually means that there in an infection.

Please take her in to the vet. I think she deserves it.

Hate to say this but the arched back is a sign of organ shutdown in an older dog. So a trip to the vet is in order to make sure that this isn't the case.

Is your beagle overweight, this breed tend to get a bit on the chunky side if food not held in check. Could be anything from arthritis to just needing to change her food. I had a beagle for 17 years and we occassionally had to change his diet and give him aspirin for arthritis because of the same symptoms you described. Definately take her to the vet to eliminate anything more serious.

I think it would be a good idea to have your beagle looked at by a Vet. The symptoms you describe sound like my neighbors dog when it developed cancer. I hope that is not the problem, but you should get it looked into..

since your dog is 13 that is a good age to live to for a dog im guessing you took good care of her . But maybe it is time to let her go now because she might be suffering with arthritis or something else like that. I know how you feel i had a 12 yr old rot who got bone cancer i cried like a baby when vet told me but i really really loved my dog and didnt want to see her suffer anymore so i put her down and put her out of her missery. \Also i was right there in the room holding her face when she went boy it sure was hard to do but i did it because i loved her so much and didnt want to see her suffer anymore. And you know whwt i think she knew because right before she took her last breath she licked my arm to let me know she was ok now sry i cant type anymore im crying too much sry hope i helped
