There really is no proper treatment for Mono except for rest. It won't turn into another virus, but it can cause other health conditions if you don't get the poper amount of rest. Because the virus that causes mono (the Epstein Barr virus) spreads throughout your lymphatic system, it can effect your liver and spleen as well. Many people have not only the cold like symptoms, but suffer from an enlarged spleen and liver as well. WIthout proper hydration and rest, the spleen can rupture and the liver can fail to do its job properly -- which can lead to anemia. Mono can also cause encephalitis. Doctors usually suggest 2 weeks of home rest, away from work and school.

No virus can spontaneoulsy change into another. You mean can the nature of the disease change. With Epstein Barr, well, not really to be honest. I mean yes, you could end up with a viral pneumonia or even encephalitis, but the chances are really low. There is no treatment except bed rest.

No, the virus may stay with the person for life, though, and cause shingles. I have never seen a chickenpox encephlalitis, but treating it would make no difference. Epstein-Barr virus.

no. but EBV is a cause for concern as certain cancers are found to have high levels of EBV when biopsied.
other issue is that with any chronic illness that has no true effective means of erradicating it, is that other diseases can be caused just by having a weakened immune system. the correct term for this is "bi-directional diseases of-______" (whatever your chronic disease is.)
