No sorry I don't agree the French had many victories before and after Napoleon. after all they had a massive empire as well. If you look at the hundred years war for instance England actually lost that in the end, as all the gains made by the English at the beginning were lost at the end. Joan of Arc another heroine who should not be ignored.
WW1 I'll give you a quote to show you the French attitude at the time. General Joffre asked his fellow French General Foch what was happening in the Battle of Marne in 1914. FOCH replied
"My left is in retreat. My centre is yielding. My right is giving way. Situation excellent. I attack in the morning"!
Now if the above doesn't show a true fighting spirit I don't know what does.
Re World War 2 if it wasn't for the English Channel we too would of capitulated to the Germans. We would not of been able to stop them.
All I'm trying to do here is give a more balanced viewpoint.
In some respects I greatly admire the French because they put France first before anyone else, unlike our stupid country where we appear to go round worrying about everyone else before our people. Also the French make their own aircraft and nuclear weapons they don't depend on the USA like we do, we can't even use our weapons without the say so of the USA. The USA have also refused us access codes for the software required to repair certain typres of military aircraft, so we can't repair them ourselves (though I don't know if this has changed now)
And just to give you a few examples of French Victories you'll find plenty if you look hard enough.
VICTORY Battle of Jargeau - June 11-12, 1429
Joan of Arc for France leads victorious against William de la Pole of England.
VICTORY Battle of Beaugency - June 16-17, 1429
Joan of Arc delivers another French victory over the English.
VICTORY Battle of Patay - June 18, 1429
La Hire and Poton de Xaintrailles of France defeat Sir John Fastolf of England, effectively turning the tide of the Hundred Years' War.
VICTORY Siege of Compiegne - June 18, 1429
Though Joan of Arc is taken prisoner (and ultimately executed), the French resist the English siege from Philip the Good and John II of Luxembourg.
VICTORY Battle of Gerbevoy - 1435
French forces led by commander La Hire and Jean Poton Xaintrailles defeat

The French are actually quite capable militarily. I would cite General Koenig's Free French force in the Desert campaign 1940-42, and the Daguerre Division in the First Gulf War.
The problem is that the French Military is continually hampered by their politicians, and has been for years.

Mmmm..strikes me that Napoleon was French, and he had a victory or two. And wasn't William the Conqueror, who defeated the English, a Frenchman?...
