Absolutely. If I were you I would save my money and use what I already have. Besides, you don't need any equipment to lose weight. Walking is enough for cardio, and you can use your own body weight for strength training. Hand weights are even better and they are not that expensive. Save your money and use it to go shopping when your clothes get too big :)

Yes and no. There are many factors to lose weight. As well, there are many factors about joining a gym.

Here are some tips as to if you should join a gym:

1) Do you need help being motivated? Going to a gym can help with that as not only are there others who are there to get fit but you can also get the urge from watching others.

2) Is there a gym close by. You should not have to walk or travel 15minutes or more to a gym. If you do, this cuts into your other duties you would have throughout the day as well as the motivation factor.

3) Professional Trainers are easy to obtain by going to a gym that supplies them.

If you are truly wanting to lose weight, have the motivation to do this, working out at home will work for you. You may need more than just a few weights.

Buying something like a Bowflex or a Universal weight system would be good as this gives you many of the advantages of the gym but in your home. However, if space is at a premium. going to the gym may be the answer to work those other parts of the body.

Whatever you decide, it is important to remember that you have taken the first step to a fitter you. Congratulations and good luck!

Push-ups, sit-ups, and running/walking are the cheapest way to lose weight and build muscle. A gym can be expensive and an inconvenience (driving across town). I recommend using that treadmill and doing come free weights and/or push-ups and sit-ups. Good luck!
