My young son has this disorder. His case is moderate and he does take medicine to lessen the severity of the tics. He is at the age when the tics tend to increase (12-13 years old). I am praying that they will decrease by the time he is 18 or so.

He is a pretty well-adjusted kid in spite of it all. He has a best friend, and many other friends. He does chores and has homework, just like everybody else. He is loved and respected the same as every member of our household. He likes to build complex Lego sets, plays chess, is artistically gifted, is sweet, kind and loving. He enjoys making stop-motion animation movies on his iMac. He's a great kid. Tourettes is a small part of who he is.

I would not trade him for the world.

What I had was very similar to Tourettes syndrome but from a psychological root rather than a physiological one.

The effects were the same. Mine involved swear words often of the worst kind that would jump out of my mouth without MY will.

It can be highly embarrassing and back then made it difficult for me to go into public places. I often felt mortified.

One of the worst times was when an acquaintance asked me about a clue for his crossword and the C word that came out....he walked away.

I got fed up having to explain myself when it happened...and even then sometimes, people obviously didn't understand 'cos some would say, no, that's okay...I understand if you want to swear! Arrrrghhh! I DIDN'T want to swear.

If it wasn't a swear word then it would be a noise like Ahhh! People would look at me, some would say what? Then I'd say 'Nothing', but I know many people thought I was weird.

How does your tourettes affect you?

I know you said dont answer if you dont have it and I dont have Tourettes, but after seeing a programme on UK Television about it last night, I just wanted to say that I really feel for you and other Tourettes sufferers. It must be awful for you to live with.

My 14 year old has tourettes, he's cool and doesn't swear just shouts out and twitches. People sometimes stare at him but he doesn't care, he's used to it. Sadly some people do give him a hard time but he can stand his ground. It is hard but doesn't change who you are inside ((*_*))
