I recently got a 2:1 BA (Hons) in English and I don't know what career paths are open to me. I don't want to go into teaching, but i'm not sure what to do with my degree.

You can follow any career you wish - employers are interested in you because you have a degree capable mind, not necessarily in the subjects of the degree - why not try advertising, or be a Librarian, work for the Income Tax department, or be a street cleaner ? the choice is yours.

You can do plenty with an English degree. I graduated in May and wanted to go into teaching but applied too late (my college didn't know much about public school teaching). I'm currently in administrations, but I suggest that you start contacting your career center and discussing what you can do. You can go into business with English, but you should also have a basic business background as well. Try to get involved in campus activities to show your leadership potential and your ability to apply yourself to many different fields. If you're interested in journalism or writing in general, find out more about that. Many college career centers are extremely helpful, so I think that would be your best step. It all depends on your interest and what you can see yourself doing. Sure, you might wind up in a career you might not enjoy for a year or so, but trust me, your college degree will pay off in the end.

Anything!

I also graduated in English, and it isn't a degree which necessarily has a career in mind. You enter many types of professions, such as Marketing, Advertising, Publishing, Media - anything that requires strong communication skills.

Perhaps if you want to travel you could teach abroad - but I wouldn't pursue Teaching just for the sake of stable income (like so many people who enter teaching and resent it for years to come).

The degree alone won't get you your dream job but combined with determination you will suceed - don't give up!

A degree in English will take you anywhere you want to go. I work for a publishing company and several of my colleagues have degrees in English. I previously worked in Construction and there were a couple of people with English Degrees. There are two completely different areas of work that you can use your English Degree in.

Degree certificates are good for lighting fires, that's all my English 2:1 is good for. I'm doing an MA now, anything to not have to go back to the office, stay out of the work place as long as possible, it's a depressing hideous life. Do anything that doesn't involve an office!!

There is such a glut of written information on the internet these days that it occurs to me someone must be writing it all! So, reporting, article writer for internet, editor, tutor, teacher, proof-reader, English teacher in foreign country, etc. If you like writing, I would suggest you major in something else and then be a writer in that field. Or go with something careeer-oriented that requires good English skills: PR, Marketing, Communications, etc.

you can probably do a masters program in a more specified area since an English degree seems like a broad area. in that case you know what kind of jobs you would want to go into when you have finished and with a masters degree you are bound to get more salary. have you thought of journalism?

Looks like teaching may be the only best paid career for you at present. You could always work abroad once you have your teaching qualification. Good luck

Any that requires good communication skills. And good for you to not slip into the obvious teaching career, its not a job to be entered into lightly.
You can offer writing skills, so management roles are possible. It might be a good idea to go to a career broker, they will assess you skills and interests and make valid suggestions for you to investigate.
