I need some help. I am a very diverse person. However, my parents are somewhat bigots. They judge races and people of different sexes without knowing anything about the person. The main thing I have a problem with is the use of the N word about African Americans (we're white). They just throw it around so casually. You may hear it 10 times a day. It makes me cringe and my ears want to bleed. They also believe that every race should date only within itself (White with White, etc). My parents are in their late 40s and I know it is difficult to change someone without them wanting to and they get mad if someone just slightly asks "why?". The thing is that I want for them to stop using the N word around me bc I have lots of African American friends & date interracially. It makes it look like I am racist whenever people hear my parents say this stuff because ppl assume you believe what your parents do. (My birth father was in the army so I had a diverse childhood & was around many diff ppl)

I would sit them down and try to camly tell your family how you feel. it may not change the way they feel, but it may help them to respect your feelings.
if all that happens is that you make it known that you disagree with them, at least you had your say and stood up for what you believe.
as far as other people assuming you are the same way, just make sure people hear your words and see your actions.
the people that are worth having as friends will see the real you.
good luck.

I am really surprised that your parents are that way, I too am in my 40's and I find that my friends and coworkers of the same age have changed there views about this. Now my mother and my grandmother were like that, but that surprises me with your parents. The thing is most people will not judge you by you parents, if you have friends that are african/american they will understand you are not like that. And if you chose to find a mate out of your race, then when you are older and get out of the house it is no longer your parents business. I am glad you got the chance to learn from your birth father, if he is still around maybe you could go and live with him.

if your family is that toxic then it's time for you to cut them out of your life. just because they are your family doesn't mean that they can be your friends and it doesn't mean that they can treat you like crap. check out the link below and get the book. your parents may not be toxic in the sense of you living a life of abuse...but they are indeed toxic to an extent by having such narrow-minded views. don't try to change other people. they will change when they are ready to (and if they want to). just focus on changing yourself and your environment to one that is more positive.

You must realize that you cannot change your parents AT ALL. However, you can pray for them. Pray for God's Will in their lives (this only applies if you are a Christian). If you are not a Christian, there is only the hope of chance that they will change because no one changes on their own.

It's sad that prejudism exists, but it does. We can't change anyone.

They better be careful what they say. Someday they may have grandchildren of a different race. What will they think and say then?
