I am just starting out in boxing (had one taster session at a boxing gym last night!) and was told I had a 'brawling' style, and that this doesn't really link in to an amateur ethic.

I am 5 10" and 170lbs, slim build, and the trainer says to concentrate on my footwork and dexeterity. He said my style is more suited to a heavyweight professional from 50 years ago?!

I hit hard and relatively slowly although I can work up three punch combos. I don't aim to KO neccesarily but like each punch to do some damage. I tend not to get out of th way of incoming punches but instead keep my chin down and barrel in to them as I take impacts well. My favourite move is very short-range hooks to the body and poweful longer hooks to the head; but I get uncomfortable too far away from my target. I think it's called 'toe to toe'?

I would like to keep this style but is there a place for it at amateur level? Can you recommend any fighters with a similar style I mightbe able to look up?

Thanks!

Take up mixed maretial arts rather than boxing you can use that as a base but learn other discaplines, you sound the perfect height and build. Find a local club and give it a go, the boxing trainers sound like they are putting you off.

So your a light heavy weight your style is not suited for the amateurs all light heavy weights hit hard you are going to have to learn how to box the only boxer I can think of who was a pretty good amateur boxer but a great professional fighter was Ray Boom Boom Mancini and your going to be shorter than most of the people you fight you said that you are slow if I were you I would try and go down in weight I don,t know your body type but the lower the weight the better off you will be

i don't think so. brawlers usually get picked apart in the amateurs. usually you have to have some boxing skill. so, work on your footwork, your defense, your handspeed and you'll probably do better.
