Friends have asked me "Who started talking about marriage first, you or her?" I honestly do not remember, we just started talking about getting married. I am sure it was not exactly a surprise when I proposed. There are some questions you just do not ask unless you are 100% of the answer.

You can drop little hints, but you might drop them in a misleading way. Has she been dropping little hints to you and you have not paid attention to her? I would first ask her if she wanted to get engaged. If she excepts this offer you can set a date for the marriage.

We discussed the idea of marriage. There was really no proposal, we talked about it and agreed it's what we wanted to do. We started looking for places to have the ceremony within a few days.

We discussed marriage, children (adoption in our case as I cannot have kids) our expectations for the future etc, so we knew that we wanted to get married, and then my b/f surprised me out of the blue
