It is my dream to represent Britain at the 2012 Olympics, having never boxed before- I know this sounds far-fetched but bear with me.

Would it be possible to reach the required level in time if a place in the Olympics was my sole aim? I am already as fit as I can be (10 mile run every day, two hours at the gym follwed by a mile-long run) but have bever boxed, which I intend to start in the summer.

I am already 21 and will be starting around the time I turn 22.

Is it possible?

Thanks!

If you set your mind to it I honestly believe you can do anything, and it sounds like your mind is set! If you put the time and effort into it, I think it's possible.

A really good place to post your question is at www.warriorboxing.com. That's the UK's boxing forum and they have an amateur topic thread. Quite a few of the elite English amateur boxers are active on that board and can answer your question. In the U.S. most of our boxers start at age 8, if not then, at least by age 10. It takes approximately 8 or 9 years to reach the elite level and have a chance at making our Olympic team. The heavier weights (178 Lbs. and up) might have a better chance at making it in less time and at an older age. The average Olympian does tend to be 21 or 22, except for Cuba and some of the Eastern European countries. Good luck.

sounds like you have every thing going for you your age is not an issue now the only thing you have to do is learn to fight and can you take it everyone can dish it out but what happens when it,s coming in and can you take the pressure leading up to a big fight if you paint this picture in your head that you can and want to win the Olympics you can do it but you must sacrifice everything to get there remember there are young men who have the same dream you have but have been working on it from the time they were 8 years old the reason I know I was one of those kids good luck

You certainly have an excellent fitness level, but unfortunately full contact fighting is not only giving but receiving blows.
But on the plus side desire and mental toughness come into play the toughest person to beat ,Is the person who believes he cannot or will not be beat,if you truly believe!!! then you will achieve it.

Good luck young man and best wishes for the future!!!!!

Unfortunately the average olympic athelete is under 25. It takes years of training to get to the olympic level. It is all up to you and your ability to learn what it takes.
