Like others have said LA has a Subway System? It's not really a System it only takes you from the Valley to Downtown and vice versa that's it! Though I have heard that the LA Subway is one of the nicest in the Country Cosmetic wise. Each stop is different from the next... They are clean and well lit. LA subway is nice again if you are heading to and from Downtown. I don't think is classify's as a system.
I have been to Amsterdam's, London's and Paris Subway Systems and LA's is by far the best looking even though London and Paris are better trasportation wise.
LA subway is nice and it's much quicker than the 101 Freeway in rush hour.

Yes, L.A.'s metro is fine to use. The subway (red line) especially is perfectly safe and an efficient way to get between downtown, Hollywood, and the valley. The red line connects with several rapid bus routes that provide easy access to other neighborhoods. For $3 a day, you can't find a better bargain anywhere.

Tourists are less likely to find a lot of use to the other lines, which mostly serve residential and industrial neighborhoods. They are also generally safe, though the passengers may add more local color to the ride than some tourists are comfortable with. You can use the rail to get from LAX to downtown, though, and it's cheap and reliable.

It's not very extensive, but it's new, clean and pretty nice. So if it goes where you need to get to, then it's good. It just doesn't go that many places.
