Great Question Piper.
There are a few main ways God speaks to us; through community, directly (holy spirit), the Bible, church, and circumstances. Nothing out of those will contradict his Bible. When making a big decision we can look at all of those and see if we get a clear answer.
Sometimes if we don't we need to wait.
But, sometimes if we don't get a clear answer we need to just make the best decision we can. God doesn't always grade our actions on a scale from 1-10. His will is us and us becoming more like Him. If we're having to make a big decision i.e. job change- He can probably accomplish His task of making us more like Him whichever choice we make. So we just choose.

Hi Lew, here is a simple rule of thumb that I use and has been reliable over the years, when you must do something that is hard and causes you conflict, then it is usually Gods will, when you would rather not be bothered and want to slink away then that is your will, remember that the ego is always fighting against the will of God and it is in the ego`s interest for us to opt out of the uncomfortable decisions.
Gods will is not always easy but the result is always inner peace no matter how difficult the task was.

Through a discernment process. I use the Ignatian system used by the Society of Jesus. It would be an essay if I wrote it here. It is available in most Catholic bookstores and of course the Jesuit community. There are other methods which are just as good.
Have a blessed and peaceful day

Gods will is fused with our own to be loving and compassionate and kind .If it is negative you can be sure it is not him. Some times you can tell because you are being pulled in a direction that you are fighting, but know is the right thing and the right direction.

Ask your self if what you are thinking about doing is the loving thing to do.

If the answer is anything but yes it is the will of the ego, or false sense of self.

If we do what lines up with the Word, it is Gods will. If we follow our own will, be won't like what we are doing, and will be board with life. When we do what God has us to do, it will be exciting.

God's will is that you walk by faith and not by sight.
God's will is that you seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.
God's will is that you set your mind on things above and not things below.
God's will is that we value more things that are invisible and eternal rather than visible and temporal.
God's will is that you walk in the Spirit and die to your flesh.
