When they struggle to go to sleep at night.

It depends on the child. If your child is waking frequently at night, (and they are not ill) you can try giving them a nap earlier and making it shorter. If they are still waking at night after about a week of this, you can see if they can make it through the day without their nap, so they sleep through the night. But if they get really cranky, I would keep giving them their daytime nap.

My oldest is now 10 and could still take naps during the day and sleep all night if I let him! My youngest on the other hand was completely done with daytime naps about 3 years old and needs less sleep than my oldest.

Well your child will let you know when they are ready - ie they will begin to sleep for shorter periods of time, or they wont be so tired at 'nap time'.
I;d say between the ages of 18 months and 3 yrs - all children are different.
Maybe you could try shortening the nap, and waking them up, but then also having bedtime moved forward.
I look after a child who needed an afternoon nap until he was 4 - but another child i look after didnt need a nap from being around 17 months.

I wouldn't try to, personally. I was once told that with 3-5 year olds naps are iffy. My son turned 5 back in December and lately I have noticed that there are fewer days where he has an afternoon nap after preschool. Now he usually gets up around 6:30-7 in the morning and goes to sleep between 8 and 8:30 at night.

I think it just phases out.

I think it depends on how active your kids are. My 3 year old still naps. He's up at 6:30am every morning for breakfast. We have a 30 minute ride to school where he stays from 7:30 until 2pm. He naps from 2:15 to 3:30. he's pretty tired after school (he's got gym, recess, play time, etc.). He has swim class once a week also from 6 to 7pm. He's in bed by 7:30 and asleep by 8pm. My older son however stopped naps by 3 (no preschool for him)but started again when he started kindergarten because he was tired. He only slept for about 30-45 minutes but he was less cranky after.

If they are having a nap in the day and still going to bed by 7 pm then keep with it.

If your child is causing problems at bedtime or getting up early (before 6 am) cut the nap.

Ia m a mother of 8 and find that if you cut out the afternoon nap just past the age of 12 months you will find that they sleep all night.I know that some will think impossible but i have a 13 month old and i do not allow her afternoon naps and she now goes to sleep at 7pm and sleeps all night.....It takes a while to get this far but if you just keep them amused, and drag out there play time, to tea time then a nice warm bath you will find that it should happen quite quickly...I have 5 under 5 and they all sleep and that is how we cope with having so many..Routine......
And you will enjoy the time with them aswell........mum of 8

around 2 or 2 1/2, but keep the after noon nap. Of course if you notice your child sleeping less and less during the first nap and longer during the second nap, they may be naturally moving out of the 1st nap and you can transition them at that time.

I have been nannying for almost 7 years and find that if the child is sleeping well at night that there is no need to cut the sleep out, they obivously need it! If it is an issue for you maybe instead of putting them into their cot/bed for a sleep you could lay them on the sofa watching a film, if they are tired they will sleep but if they dont sleep at least they are having some time out. It will be hard at first for the child to cut out the sleep especially if they enjoy sleeping!

It is usually around the age of three. I think it depends on the child but usually between 3 and 4. If you find your child is still sleepy after the age of four then this may be a sign that your child needs to go to bed earlier at night.
