I dont like cake that much, but I need one for the tradition of my wedding. So, basically, boxes for the bottom 2 layers and real cake on the top, so I could cut that for just me and hubby.

Actually most places that make cakes will do that. When I was deciding on what cake I wanted ( I wanted 4 or 5 tiers but we didn't need to feed that many people) all the places I went told me that they could decorate boxes to make it look like the rest of the cake (real icing and everything, just no middle). making it cheaper on us but no one would ever know.

Honestly I think they are pointless. I have been to two weddings out of I don't know how many that had fake cakes and the rest had real cakes. Both times, the couple pretended to cut into them for pictures. The first time, it was just silly because the cake was entirely fake but there was nothing to serve the guests, even an alternative. The second time this was done, the couple cut into the cake for pictures, but they had 3 sheet cakes (each in different flavors) on a banquet table that were cut to order to maintain freshness. Guests actually commented that they preferred that setup since you could get whatever flavor you wanted in whatever size you wanted and it wasn't cut until you asked for it so that it wouldn't dry out. It was also easier to transport leftovers that way. Really though, having baking experience and talking to professional bakers who actually do agree with me, I don't understand how sheet cakes can possibly be cheaper because there is so much extra labor involved. True, they don't have to bake the cake for the tiers, but the decorating is where the bulk of the labor and money goes and they have to make the icing on the styrofoam look perfect in addition to baking and icing extra sheet cakes, and yet they don't charge what their time and labor is worth. In any other industry, you would be charged extra for the extra labor, with good reason. I don't get how the bakers who do this are able to make a living because they are shortchanging themselves, and lying to their customers at the same time.

I know that this day is supposed to be all about you ... but at the reception, you need to keep your guests in mind. Just because you don't like cake that much doesn't mean that your guests don't like cake. I'm not sure if you're trying to save money or if you just really wanted to do it just for you and your hubby, but please at least have a little more than just the cake top so your guests can enjoy the wedding cake. By all means, I'm not saying spend a lot of money and buy the most elaborate cake you can ... but I just feel that you should at least have a sheet cake or something for your guests who would want cake can have it. I know a lot of people who take some cake home with them. I am not a huge fan of cake myself, but I am at least having a cake for my guests.

What the hell? You arent having a real cake because you dont like it, but are going to put a small cake ontop of a fake one for you and your husband to eat????

That makes no sense. The top should be cardboard and the bottom real so you can serve wedding cake to your GUESTS. Or better yet, just make the whole thing real. You only take the one bite you feed eachother anyway, which it sounds as if you are planning to do as it is. Let me tell you, if your guests see a cake they are going to be expecting a piece of it.

You can usually get them from private cake decorators. When I was taking cake decorating lessons from Michael's, they had several Styrofoam cakes that they used as examples of the different kinds of decorating techniques that would be taught. Are you not having guests at your wedding? Even if you don't like cake maybe your guests would like some since it's so traditional. If you don't like a standard cake, you can get one made out of cheesecake, or Twinkies or cupcakes or whatever you like.

They're not any cheaper than real cakes, you know. You'll probably be saving money if you get a real cake. And besides, just because you don't like cake doesn't mean your guests won't want some.

I agree with Kate, if your guests see a cake and see you and your fiance cut into it, they will be expecting a piece. If you're going to do the cake cutting ceremony, get a real cake for your guests also. You could make it out of cheesecake if you like that better!

I agree with above... the wedding cake is for your guest not for you.... and it's actually cheaper to get a real cake. Just have other desserts that you like!! Most people serve more then just cake these days..... have a dessert platter.

Here's an idea: Use Ferrero Rochers or some other type of chocolates stacked in a shape or mound to replace the boxes, or to hide the boxes.
