He might not get cancer at all ( it is a possibility).
there is now way that we can say he is going to get cancer after a given period.
the one thing that I can say while confident is that smoking has many many adverse effects on his health, including lungs, teeth, skin and so on.
for more detailed information about smoking (its effects and ways to stop it ) I suggest exploring the Health Information Center website : http://google.com/coop/cse?cx=007185308018807068018%3Ax2z07lqx3mg

To get cancer or not depends on individual! Look at Chairman Deng of PROC! He was a heavy smoker puffing non-stop for half a decade 50years! You know he passed away at what age?

So, 20 cigarettes a day is nothing! I knew quite a few B747-400 SIA pilots (around 60 years old) and they are SUPER heavy smoker since young! They are damn healthy!

The are many sea Captains working in Singapore Maritime Academy as lecturers! God damn thing, many of them puffing as solid as 3 packets a day! Thery are still going strong!

So, the bottom line is NOT all smokers will kenna cancer! Go it?

BTW, I am a non-smoker.

Each person is born with a different genetic thresh hold for cancer. One person may get cancer from 20 years of smoking, while another will get it from just being around it for a few years (Dana Reed). Since no one knows exactly when we get to the point of no return, it's safer to not put this horrendous poison in our own bodies.
ps even if it wont cause cancer for years, it does so much harm to so many other organs including the heart. It's a nasty habit.

It all depends the person. I know someone who is 85 yrs old and has been smoking a cigarette pack a day for about 40 yrs and she still alive. dont get me wrong when she coughs it sounds really bad but, hey she's 85 yrs old and still hanging on. so it just depends your body and how it responds to smoking so many cigarettes a day. I myself would never take that risk and see what happens =)

I agree with Better Life that there is a long laundry list of physical afflictions with smoking, not just the threat of cancer. Various lung diseases, loss of taste, smell, etc. He might be one of those "lucky" ones that is never afflicted with cancer. It's mind boggling to me the very healthy people that deal with cancer that don't smoke, drink, eat healthy, exercise. Yet there are those like this, or those that eat fast food everyday & are 50 pounds or more overweight that never experience it. But again, not to say that those that are unhealthier experience other health issues, just not cancer.

The best thing for him is to Quit smoking. Its hard for some people but thats what needs to be done. Not everyone gets cancer from smoking but do you really want to risk it? thats what you need to ask him. if you want, ask him if he has anyone in his family that got cancer and if they smoked cigarette, i usually will follow in that path. Sit down with him and talk about it, if he gets pissed oh well, atleast you tryed to save him from making a stupid mistake of smoking

There is no set time when someone will get cancer. Different people respond to cancer cells in different ways. Some people smoke their whole lives and never get affected.

It all depends on his diet. He needs 2000 mg of vitamin C a day.
A pack destroys this much.
He may not ever get cancer at all.
Some folks still smoke in their 90's and never got cancers.
Its a matter of foods u eat.

Well it's not a guarentee, but his chances are a heck of a lot higher. But at 25 it's pretty rare. I mean it's possible, but very rare.
