Its a stand for cameras. Since most of them have three "legs", they are called "Tripods" (Tri = latin for three and pod = latin for leg).

You mount a camera on this tripod and can shoot photos with long exposure times, so the picture isn't blurred when you shake while holding the camera.

A tripod is used to steady measuring and photographic devices. A sextant is placed on a tripod to do surveying. a camera can be placed on a tripod for many reasons. One is stability and one is so that a shot can be taken numerous times of the same location from the same vantage point with little or no differences in the aspect ratio from the view point.

a tripod has three legs, each leg being independently extendable. this feature allows one to set up a camera, or canvas for painting, or a scientific instrument, or even a stool, on a level ploatform even if the ground or floor is at an angle.

also, often one needs a surface that is steady, for time-lapse photography for example. a tripod is just the thing for this!
