This is a tough call because your question is about an entire nation. Most police forces are local, or city police in the U.S. There are also state police, but they are primarily responsible for state law enforcement and do not interfere with localities. The F.B.I. or Federal Bureau of Investigation, is a kind of U.S. government police force, but they have again different priorities than the local and state police.
The danger of a national police force of great size is the fear of becoming a police state. The security it gives comes with a price and that price is freedom.
The answer is not always more police. A good start is to look at what social issues are causing the high crime.
