You can make buttermilk...or at least a very close substitute with just milk and vinegar. Mix a cup of milk with a tablespoon of white vinegar and let sit for about 5 minutes. It is not true buttermilk, but it does work well in recipes. Try it!

Try one of the Indian food stores , I worked there in the 1980's, and there is a soured cooking cream, similar to thin yougart, this is also a good method, 1 cup of whole milk, 1/2 cup plain yougart and a squeeze of lemon juice, as the acid in the lemon juice will activate the baking powder, or if you using a mix the same.

But the ere is another option, the Arabic markets sell a drink, a carbonated yougart soda,it would be fine, and you would not need the baking powder, call around before making a long trip.

Actually there is buttermilk sold in cold storage and Jasons supermarket. I bought mine there....

Ask the staff for help. Sometimes it is placed where the cheese & milks are....sometimes you can find it in the baking / pancakes section.

hope this helps! and yes yes, pancakes definitely tastes better made with buttermilk :)

p/s: you can also try phoon huat / sun lik but i'm not too sure if they sell it though.. since they sell baking things maybe you can try asking. Also.... it also helps which cold storage branch you go to... if you go to the ones located at expat areas, you are bound to find it there....

You may not be able to find buttermilk but you can approximate your own by adding 1 Tbs of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 cup of regular milk. You may be able to find powdered buttermilk in the baking section of a grocery store. I use it frequently and I love it.

I don't know about Singapore...

You can search for "Buttermilk Substitute" or use any of these:

For each 1 cup buttermilk called for in a recipe, use 1 cup plain yogurt or sour cream;

OR

1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar plus enough milk to make 1 cup;

OR

1 cup milk plus 1 3/4 tablespoons cream of tartar;

OR

1/4 cup buttermilk powder and 1 cup water.

If you can't find it you can use 1 cup of milk with 1tsp of white vinegar per cup.

I've used this when I'm out. It works just fine.
