It never could work. It was a way of oppressing the host culture by granting equal, if not higher status, to all other cultures. Even Trevor Phillips admits this. It was part of this governments left wing PC agenda. Deeply unpatriotic, egalitarian (everyone gets prizes).
Islam, for example, doesn't separate culture from religion, it operates as a consolidated whole, whereas, in Britain, and most other cultures, one can identify the cultural elements separately.
So, it is difficult to know what we mean by culture anyway.
There has to be a great deal more that binds you in a fundamental way, than separates you in minor ways. If I cared a lot about my culture, I wouldn't want to risk transporting it somewhere else where it didn't originate and wont be encouraged. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I think multi culturalism has failed. I have no problem with immigration ,am not racist but ,I am sorry there is a but ,there has to be a dominant culture and that should be the culture of the country you are in.I respect other cultures and think everyone should do that ,sometimes though there is a culture clash and when that happens no one is prepared to say'I am sorry but this is the way we do it in Britain' .I am not christian but must accept that the laws of this land are based on christian rules and so should everyone else. I have no objection to anybody following religions of their choice but as a christian country Sunday is the holy day ,some other religions have other weekly holy days ,if it can be arranged for a person to have that day off work -fine ,but id it makes difficulties then they cannot be accommodated. Not all children can have different days off school. Schools cannot teach the history of every country although because we once had an Empire many countries are mentioned in our history , There are just so many ways it can't work with each and every culture being catered for. That is not to say any is superior or inferior ,we are all just different and it is impossible to give every culture in Britain equal weight. Respect all, welcome immigrants and help them adjust but multiculturalism just divides us all and diminishes life for all. We all have so much to give and share with each other.

Multiculturalism isn't working in the US for the most part either. There has to be 1 unifying factor to bridge the gaps and it atleast used to be a common language. Now it seems all I ever here is we want you got and you're going to give it to us. I mean when you can't even talk to one another.........it's insane. When there's areas in your own country where you aren't allowed to go because they don't want you there.......it really is just multiple countries inside a country. Instead of actual real borders for a country.......now there's invisible borders you best not cross and repeatedly this constant threat that the new commers are taking over. I personally see a civil war as well here.........

kate d, there is a way of testing your idea, and i would do this.
if each county in britain was given a vote on who has no objections to multi culturalism in their county, let that county say yes or no those counties who said yes then put the immigrants in their counties, those who said no can reject it.because at the moment theres many people who are saying its working who live in the sticks and are making money out of it, they are good in theory but might not want them on their doorstep. it only works when there is no threats, if there are threats it dosent work.

i personal think we should all go to Iraq and start to build as many Church's over there as they have built mosques in our country,
then that's see how MULTICULTURAL we are...
they'd have our heads off before we had chance to say Jesus Christ almighty,
we just go out of our way not offend them...this is our country,if you don't like the way we do thing..
why the hell did you move here

This is Britain.
The emphasis should be on immigrants fitting in with the British way of life, rather than us bending over backwards to fit in with them.
I'm going to eat pork and celebrate Christmas and Easter. I don't care if it offends certain minorities or not.

It would work better if those who came here to live adopted our way of life, rather than staying in their own communities and refusing to speak our language, But look how many Brit's who live in Spain and never move out of their own little communities too. The one difference between those who come here to those who go to Spain is we tend to bring wealth and money to place's like Spain, as those who come here tend to bleed our service's dry !

Its not working how things are right now - that's the Labour governments fault. I think it could work - but it will take a long time to repair the damage - I'm sure it won't happen in my life time.

Eventually multiculturalism will lead to civil war and loss of freedom.
If we don't get things under control we will all have to become Muslims or be eliminated.
