One of the points of meditation is getting those thoughts IN control. When one first starts meditation it seems like your random thoughts will never slow down. (At least for me it did.) But with practice and application everyday, they will usually start to mellow out. Start small. Be content to sit quietly with your eyes closed. As you are able to do this, focus on getting the peripheral thoughts out of your mind. Try and focus on your ideal, whatever that may be. Love, peacefulness, contentment, etc. Gradually, over time, with applied practice each and every day, you will find yourself better able to tame those random thoughts.
It is important to practice every day. Practice makes perfect. Choose a time when you are less likely to be disturbed, early in the morning or late at night. Unplug the phone, find a quiet place and position yourself comfortably. Close your eyes and be still.
I would find a spiritual book I found comforting and read from it a few moments before I started my meditation. For me, it helped to focus and find that quiet place inside that I would seek as spiritual refuge before I started my meditational journey. Don't expect to be able to do it perfectly when you first start the practice. Be patient with yourself. You will be better able to do it over time.
Good luck

You have to train your mind. You do not run a marathon the first day you start your running program. it is a process...take it slow and easy. Attempt to concentrate for brief periods...if only a few seconds. You thoughts are controllable...use a simple mantra...repeating several words over and over..." I can control my thoughts, I can control my thoughts," Even a little bit will help and it will get better. Believe in that and believe in yourself

What you need is practice and to understand that you are in charge of your thoughts, not the other way around.
