Yes , praying makes one introspect. When we look into ourselves we try to be objective and start judging our actions.We do a lot of things in our life , some good some not so , only when we look into our mind and pray to God to show us the way , sometimes very clearly the answer becomes clear and apparent.We pray for our own actions and for people around us. There are so many things in life that cannot be explained with logic, it is only our faith and dependence on God that sees us out of our conflicting ideas.

both. All prayers and petitions. God wants to hear what we have to say. He already knows, of course, but He loves the interraction with His beloveds.
Pray to praise Him as well, not just to ask for stuff. There's that relationship thing again. He wants a relationship with you. He doesn't want to be a vending machine to you!
