Any driving without insurance is illegal I'm afraid. Get a cover note by calling your insurance company when you buy it. Although you won't physically have the cover note you will be covered.

If insurance is required for you to take the care off the lot, then the place you are buying it from will notify you of this, and will not be able to legally give you the car untill you have proof of insurance. Ask the dealer.

The vehicle has to be taxed, insured, fully roadworthy and MOT'd. Only exception to the tax and MOT rule is if you are driving it to an MOT station for a pre-arranged and booked test. Then, if the vehicle fails its test, and you drive it away, the police can do you for whatever is wrong, and driving a non-roadworthy vehicle on the road.

Get a one day insurance for the vehicle.
