First you need to decide whether you want to attend a Catholic service or a Protestant service. Once you decide, choose as church in your neighborhood. Go to a Sunday morning service. Sit in the middle of the church, not at the back. Do not sit at the front on your first service because you will not see what other people are doing. On your first service you need to follow what others are doing until you learn the routine. Some churches have very strict orders of service and some are very relaxed. You will quickly discover which is which. Be relaxed. Allow yourself to be filled with the Holy Spirit. You will know what i mean when he comes upon you; therefore, remain receptive to him. Stay away from cult religions such as the Mormons, Christian Scientists, Scientology and Jehovah Witnesses---they are not Christian, although they pretend to be.

Interesting choice of words. Christians are aliens in this world. Heaven is our home. But if you just want to go to a service as a spectator and not be discovered, go on Sunday morning, because that's usually the biggest service. And don't sit in the back. That will get you more attention than anything. Arrive a little bit late and leave a little bit early. Otherwise you're likely to be approached by the welcoming committee. Good luck!
edit: Ekduin. How is anybody supposed to know those things about a church before attending?

You need to choose your church well. Most churches are openly welcoming for all visitors. Don't fear that you will be urged to become a Christian as soon as you walk in the door. I have been to many 'Christian Fellowship' churches - churches that don't fit under any specific denomination - and they have been welcoming to all who are interested in attending. They will be friendly and happy to see you. Open your mind, and you may find that God speaks to you.

Do not listen to anything that is not of LOVE. If you see the pastor being a bigot of any kind RUN! Churches should not be teaching anyting but LOVE and the salvation of Mankind through Christ ultimate life sacrifice.

As they said, choose a good one. I recommend a Catholic Church as I believe it is the true religion. Then as they said go and sit and talk to God, Who is everywhere, but especially in Church. In the Catholic Church, He lives in the tabernacle where He is truly present with His Body. You can also look for a friend to bring you and show you around. Better go with a friend so that you are not alone. He or she can answer all your questions.

Start by going with an open heart to receive the Word of God. Try reading your Bible at home. There are to many denominations out there not teaching the word to go in blindly! Beware!
