He lives in a Spartan apartment in a small enclave within Rome called the Vatican which includes St Peter's square, the St Peter's basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican museum and associated buildings and dependencies. The Vatican is an independent state from Italy, just like Monaco is independent from France, but is tiny. The building where the Pope lives consists mostly of administrative offices. Modern popes do not enjoy luxury and are not decked in jewels and expensive clothes like some of their predecessors who were actually princes and rulers.They are the leaders of the church and their lifestyle is restrained and modest.
