From the reports they said that they were going to do away with the likes of French and German (which are becoming useless enough anyway) - and start to introduce Urdu, Mandarin and perhaps Arabic.

I myself am already in China studying Chinese - when I was at school - 11/12 years ago I had to learn French - I hated it, what an absolute waste of my time. Kids are being offered the chance to learn interesting languages that will give them the edge when looking for jobs. If I had been given the chance I would have studied anything bedsides French and German.

About Spanish though... I didn't read anything about them getting rid of that - it would be silly if they did considering how many people speak it - then again if you follow that line of thought, studying Chinese would make even more sense (and more money for your kid's future as well).

What do you mean Islamic language? There is no language called Islamic language. I'm guessing what you mean is Urdu and Arabic which is not just spoken by muslims - especially arabic which is spoken by over 30 million Christian arabs and about 10 million Jewish arabs.
Anyway, if you read the story correctly, you will find that they are not going to stop Spanish lessons but they are just going to offer lessons in Urdu and Arabic for anyone that wants to do them. This will have absolutely no effect on your children if they want to learn Spanish.

Islamic is Arabic, right? Arabic is a so so so so interesting language, and I think Spanish is also good. If whoever you're speaking about can learn both, start soing it. But, know that, Arabic is the hardest language in the world. It don't have rules about tenses, and it has a special tense for commands for example. But, believe me, it's so interesting. An d, I think you know Spanish more than me, so you choose.

Personally I think Spanish, being the second most widely spoken language in the world, should be compulsory. But I do think they should teach the punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and other asian languages if possible. Where I used to live in the UK Urdu would have been extremely useful. Now ironically, in need Spanish, luckily I have a lot of people around who can help me with that.

Any language learned at school will not result in your child being fluent or even decent in the language, learning a language at school will equip your child to learn languages in general. I'm a British Christian living in an Arabic speaking country. I spent 7 years learning French at school and today after 4 years in Arab countries I speak much better Arabic. I would encourage your kids to learn any language they enjoy. The skills they learn will be equally valuable for any languages they choose to learn in the future.

Arabic is such an amazing language, but at the same time it is very difficult. I think it really is up to the student or their parents, but I think it's a great idea to add more choice.
