We all have them but is there a reason as to why, apart from being able to open certain things or for women to paint them.

Try scratching without them, but otherwise I can't think of any other use - unless it's to dig someone's eyes out with!

As far as I am aware fingernails (and toenails) are there to protect our fingers from harm. We use our fingers and toes more than any other part of our body so they need protecting. It works the same way that eyelashes and eyebrows protect our eyes.
