At month 5: a great dane puppy should be about 65-85 lbs and 25-30" tall at the withers (which is the shoulders). If your dog is a bit onthe small side while the puppy stage don't be too worried. Some puppies grow at their on pace. No matter what he will reach the correct height weight that he is genetically meant to be. The website below lists a good guideline for keeping track of your puppy's growth and remember the females are usually smaller than the males.

Remember giant breed dogs take quite a while to develop fully - around 27 months, compared to mini breeds which is 12 mths! The size of your dane will depend on a few factors: the breeder and their lines - each breeder will breed for particular traits, and using particular dogs and bitches. You will find that the appearance will vary between breeders (but kept to the breed standard). I also think it is the height, not the length in this breed that is desired (height to the shoulders) and you should be able to contact your breeder to find out roughly what size your dog should be at this age.
It will also depend on the food you feed - this breed must be fed a premium puppy food, until he/she is around 18-24 mths. I would recommend one specifically for giant breeds as this caters for their unique growth stages. Feeding a "supermarket" quality food will cause, amongst other things, incomplete development, and feeding an adult diet instead of a puppy formula can cause serious repercussions, especially in this size breed (poor bone development, nutrient deficiencies etc). Check out www.Royalcanin.com.au and look for the Giant Breed - Growth page.
Your pup has quite some way to go, so don't stress too much, provided you are supplying a nutritionally balanced diet, and plenty of exercise.

I have a Great Dane cross and she didn't really start to grow until she was six months old. She is 14 months now and I think she is probably full grown but I have heard that they don't fully mature until they are 2.

you can usually tell how big a dog will get by looking at their paws. female dogs also tend to be a bit smaller. also every litter has a runt but if it is a pure bread dane then it will definitely not be short!

I wonder how much a 5 month old should be too. My female is 5 months old and she weighs about 55 lbs. She's as tall as an average sized german shepard, but she's very thin looking.

haha. great dane. short. It'll grow. don't worry about that. even if it's the runt of the litter, they'll still grow to at least your hip.
