you could always call a shelter and tell them what you are looking for...hopefully, you will find a kitten that has been born at the shelter (ie had a pregnant mom taken there). Then they've been around humans all of their lives and are much more human friendly.
They can then fax you some forms and will deliver the kitten to you if you ask because you can't drive. Course, you'd probably want to see and meet the cat first. So best bet is to ask a friend to drive you to a shelter. But you can always do a little research via phone and internet first.
Don't grab a kitten you see outside your house. You could but they often already have feral tendencies and are already programmed as "wild." Plus, shelter will give you their first 2 rounds of shots for free. Last, kitten may not be old enough and not ready to be weaned from his momma yet.

When I wanted a kitten, then realised it was too difficult to get about to rescue centres (I too have no car) I called my local vet and asked where they could recommend - it turns out they had an abandoned kitten handed in a few days earlier - I walked straight over to have a look and now now he lives with me and my flatmates!
he's such a cool cat, they said they get about three or four abandoned kittens a week and for £50 they gave him all his shots and fixed him and everything!! call your local vet - see if they have any abandoned kittens...
try Northumberland Vetenary Partnership, Belvedere Terr, Alnwick, NE66 2NX 01665 602516 and The Aln Veterinary Group, Wagonway Rd, Alnwick, NE66 1QQ 01665 510999
GOOD LUCK! and good on you for rescuing a cat and not bying one!

Try getting on your local shelter web site there are many many poor grown cats and kittens that people have given up or strays. Maybe one of those groups can help you in getting the cat you are looking for. They have a question and answer form on-line at least where I live and a volunteer or someone temporarily taking care of a stray may be willing to help you. Best of luck to you and that poor cat who just wants someone to love. In the area I live in on-line they give you the story behing the cat, maybe the owner died or picked up on the curb and a picture.

Contact all the usual charities such as RSPCA, Cats Protection League, etc. They don't all have rescue centres, many of them use "foster homes" - volunteers take the animals into their home and care for them until a suitable home can be found.
You wont find any young kittens about at the moment as "kitten season" hasn't begun. Most kittens are born from Spring through to Autumn, so you can expect to find them available from early May onwards.

Everytime you look in a newsagents, always look at the notice board where people can sell the stuff, they don't want anymore. Sometimes you get people, whose cats have had kittens and that they are selling or even giving them away to a good home. Its worth a try and gives all kittens a new home!

You could also try looking on Gumtree.com. If you dont find anyone in your area, try putting out a wanted ad. I did the same and am now mummy to a lovely little ginger kitten.
Good luck.
