The Netherlands is the name of the country and the football team. Holland is the part with the largest population and where the main cities are. It's a little like the difference between the United Kingdom and England - except the United Kingdom has 4 teams that play in international competitions and the Netherlands has only one.

'The Netherlands' is the correct official name of the country. The country was called Holland in 1940s and 1950s and still is commonly referred to as Holland. However the country has two provinces called North Holland and South Holland.

The Netherlands (Dutch: Nederland) is the European part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Dutch: Koninkrijk der Nederlanden), which consists of the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles, and Aruba.
The Netherlands is often referred to by the name Holland. This terminology is not correct, as the provinces of North and South Holland in the western Netherlands are only two of the country's twelve provinces.

The official name of the country is The Netherlands.
Holland refers only to two of the 12 provinces.
Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland.

The other 10 provinces are: Friesland, Groningen, Drente, Overijssel, Flevoland, Utrecht, Gelderland, Zeeland, Noord-Brabant and Limburg.

They're the same thing! I heard that Holland was from the two provinces (Noord and Zuide)...so people decided to call it Holland! I guess because it's easier than saying the Netherlands all the time!
