Well if you are friends who actively hang out etc then you already have his attention, why don't you just be really honest with him and tell him, it would save alot of energy. No need to flirt although it's alot of fun but sometimes people get their communications all mixed up and misunderstood etc you may as well just ask him out on a date telling him your attracted to him, if he is also keen he will accept and thats a good start.

Well try to invite him to get out for a cinema for a walk for whatever you want and he likes. If you dont dare to ask him just be more often with him and try to show him your interest. He will propably understand this.

Ask him questions about himself. Everyone likes to talk about themselves and if your willing to listen and act interested he will want to be around you. Make sure you listen more than you talk.

Try to spend more time with him . sit next to him, try to get his mobile number, try to know what are his hobbies and favorite films, ask him to go to the cinema with you. don't worry too much if he is interested he will himself ask you out.
