My 17 month old daughter, we found out today has an ear infection in one of her ears. The doctor however refused to prescribe her an antibiotic because she said that it will go away on its own. According to her my daughter was not sick enough!
I was under the impression that ear infection should be treated immediately. Has anyone been through something like this? Should I try treat her with homeopathy.

thank you all for your responses. the doctor we took our daughter to was extremely rude and we live in Holland so getting a second opinion is not an option. Sucks, yes! but that's the way it is. she did tell us to come back in 4-5 days if it doesn't get any better.

Ugh. It's the new school of treatment for ear infections. It's true that sometimes they just get better on their own...but it's not common in my experience. My daughter has ear infections like they're going out of style. It's a family thing and so we are all well versed. It's a movement in response to the overuse of antibiotics. However this is the first time I've ever heard of a doctor going along with it. Call your doctor back...or even go as far as to see another doctor. Ask specifically why they feel that medicine isn't necessary when your child has an infection. If you don't like the answer they give you then find a new doctor. Personally we've tried the wait and see method with ear infections before...and the infection just got worse. I can't tell you exactly what will happen in your specific case but I had ear infections routinely until I was school age and they hurt like the dickens. Until you get things figured out baby Tylenol should help with the pain and/or fever and she'll probably be more comfortable in an upright position as opposed to laying flat on her back. If you hear her scream randomly suddenly in the night and there's discharge on her pillow or near her head then her ear drum may have ruptured. If that happens then break out the Tylenol and call your doctor immediately the next morning and demand the antibiotics. It's not life threatening and won't damage her hearing from just once but it's extremely painful and can get infected in it's own right. Good luck and hope she feels better.

Studies have shown that many ear infections clear up on their own without antibiotics, that the body's own immune system beats the infection on it's own. By treating EVERY ear infection with antibiotics, you breed resistant bacteria that don't respond, and cause big problems. (such as needing intravenous antibiotics, which is NOT fun for anyone, let alone a child!)
What the doctor should have said to you, in addition to giving a course of action for pain - (i.e. pain drops or tylenol or motrin) - was if your child is still having ear pain in two to three days either call or come back in to be re-evaluated. In which case - that's what you should do. I wouldn't do homeopathy for now - sometimes that can make it worse.
Good luck! I hope she feels better. It's rough having a sick little kid.

Very recently medical experts found out that children who receive antibiotics and child who don't (for ear infections) tend to get better in the same number of days. As a result, and in view of the problem with antibiotics' being over-prescribed, it is now recommended (by one of the agencies like The American Academy of Pediatrics or one of those) that children not be prescribed antibiotics unless the ear infection won't clear up on its own (or possibly unless it is extreme).
Based on these recent guidelines, I don't think you need to do anything but wait (and if your doctor suggested something to reduce any fever then you could use that).

Why make the kid suffer? Go back to the doctor or find a local clinic office and request an antibiotic. I'm assuming she probably has a runny nose/cold with this ear infection so don't let it wait. It could get worse and you don't want that.

Without wasting any time, please take your daughter to ENT specialist. My son too had pus (since birth) in the right ear and I did not care or gave him right treatment. He is now 25 years old and very recently had to be operated upon which cost me dearly. I would advise you sincerely, not to repeat the mistake I made and take care of the child before it is too late.
