I believe, Ph is used mainly in The words of greek origin. For instance the name Phillip. Other examples are Pharmacie, Chorophyl etc, if u look into it u will see that's mainly it. english Ph is a pure F in greek though, so there is no real reason for it except for distinguishing those words.

Generally, ph is used for words (or in this case, names) of Greek origin. Don't know if that's because the Greek letter phi (which is just one letter) looks a bit like p?

we use f there are no memorable use for ph Less than ten words will ever come out of your mouth as phase ,etc, all things are are f. In old English they use ff for ss and that is confusing to read sixteenth century treasure stories in London magazines

Ph from Greekwords like philo to love for Philip, f from Latin workds like fenestra for defenestration (which is a word you see almost daily in the tabloids)

Im not being mean or anything. Im being serious, but, you use 'F' when the word begins with that letter and "Ph" when the word begins with it. Its all a matter of where the word originated and how its spelled.

i always thought that words with greek origin always use "ph", like phillip is a greek name, also phobia, phone, but maybe i'm just making it up
