How It Works

Prescription-strength permethrin kills the scabies mite.

Permethrin 5% (Elimite) is a prescription cream that is applied to the skin, left on for 8 to 14 hours, and then washed off with lukewarm, soapy water. A second application after 1 week is sometimes recommended to kill any new mites that have hatched.

Nonprescription permethrin 1% is used to treat lice but is not strong enough to cure scabies. The stronger prescription medication is needed to treat scabies.

Follow these instructions for using scabies medications.
Why It Is Used

Permethrin cream (Elimite) is one of the first medications doctors prescribe to cure a scabies infestation.1 It is the treatment of choice for children. Permethrin 5% cream is considered safe for infants as young as 2 months old.1

Permethrin should be used with caution on people who are allergic to pyrethrin products or chrysanthemums.
How Well It Works

Research has shown permethrin to be more effective than lindane, without the risk of rare yet severe side effects.1 A single application of permethrin cream (Elimite) cures most scabies infestations. Itching usually decreases significantly within 24 hours, though some itching is common for up to several weeks after treatment.

People who have crusted (Norwegian) scabies (rare) may need to apply the medication several times. It may be necessary to follow the initial permethrin treatment with other scabies medications (such as ivermectin, lindane, or sulfur) to cure this form of scabies.
Side Effects

Permethrin is considered very safe. Possible side effects include:

* Temporary redness of the skin.
* Itching.
* Burning or stinging.

If these side effects persist, call your health professional.

See Drug Reference for a full list of side effects. (Drug Reference is not available in all systems.)
What To Think About

Itching commonly continues for up to several weeks after treatment with a scabies medication. This doesn't mean that the scabies mites are still alive; it means that the body is still reacting to the mites and their feces.

Unless your health professional recommends it, do not apply permethrin scabies medication (Elimite) more than once. Overuse of scabies medications can irritate the skin and may increase the risk of side effects.

[edit] Uses

In agriculture, Permethrin is mainly used on cotton, wheat, maize, and alfalfa crops, and is also used to kill parasites on chickens and other poultry. Its use is controversial since, as a broad-spectrum chemical, it kills indiscriminately; as well as the intended pests, it can harm beneficial insects including honey bees and small mammals such as mice.

However, permethrin can be used in a targeted manner as well. This is the basis for a method of reducing populations of the deer tick Ixodes scapularis (I. dammini). Biodegradable cardboard tubes stuffed with permethrin-treated cotton, are sold under the brand name Damminix. Mice collect the cotton for lining their nests, and the pesticide on the cotton kills any immature ticks that are feeding on the mice.[1]

Permethrin is also used in healthcare, to eradicate parasites such as head lice and scabies, and in industrial and domestic settings to control pests such as ants and termites.

Permethrin kills ticks on contact with treated clothing. According to the Connecticut Department of Public Health, it "has low mammalian toxicity, is poorly absorbed through the skin and is rapidly inactivated by the body. Skin reactions have been uncommon." [2]

Permethrin is used in tropical areas to prevent mosquito-borne disease such as Dengue fever and malaria. Mosquito nets used to cover beds may be treated with a solution of permethrin. Military personnel training in malaria-endemic areas may be instructed to treat their uniforms with permethrin as well. An application should last several washes.

Side affects which are common are itching, reddened skin/stinging, a rash while using this is rare. Liquid should be washed off after 10 mins if its for headlice, cream should be washed off between 8-12 hrs if for scabies. The duration of it is untill its washed off, not sure about discolouration of clothes or alternatives.
