How did terrestrial (land based) life get started on earth if there was no oxygen present in the atmosphere 500 million yrs ago?

I'm not sure of the timing, but at some point ocean-based plants began working their way onto land. Also, the best available fossil evidence points to a certain type of lungfish as the first animal to venture onto land, although giant scorpions could also do this.
