My brother wants to propose to his girlfriend of 6 years and was asking me what a good size is. I have no idea!!
How many carats are ideal?
HE is upper middle class, definately not a millionaire, but he wants to get her a nice sized one, bigger than average I suppose.
He is in the price range of $5,000-$10,000

Anything over 1 carat will be impressive to her friends, which is really what it's all about, right? :p After that, the cut, color and clarity are much more important than having a larger ring. I'd say a full carat center stone and maybe another half in side stones is a very generous ring.

Congrats!

You can get an excellent ring in that price range. Here's the thing, if she has small fingers (skinny), a huge diamond will look kind of silly on there and vice versa. There is no "ideal" carat amount. The thing you should be more concerned with is a good diamond, if he is willing to pay for it. Because you can get a lot of carats but the diamond is of bad quality. Mine personally is a carat and is a brilliant round cut, which means it sparkles like crazy. It is thisclose to being perfect diamond. and you can totally tell the difference with others. They just don't sparkle as much. He should shop around at different places and learn about the diamonds (the 4 Cs, cut, clarity, etc.) and then base his decision from there. Oh and negotiate. Just cause they say one price, doesn't mean you can't negotiate it :)

First of all, don't go with some of the other answerers who say it should be worth two or three months' salary - that is bunk, total marketing hype by diamond merchants and jewellers.
It's not the cost of the ring which is important, it's what it symbolizes. The average cost of an engagement ring is just under $1,000 - and nice ones can really be had in that range. Usually when the diamond is just larger, it is more flawed. More women would prefer to have a smaller, yet more precious stone. He should save more of his money for the marriage, not only on a ring.

the size honestly doesn't matter, it's the sparkle and cut to it that really matters.. i agree with one of the other posters about the Heart on Fire diamonds, they are gorgeous.. as are the Leo diamonds.. if he gets a really good diamond with the cut, clarity, carats it will run a pretty penny.. but big giant diamonds like 3 carats and up can tend to look fake and gaudy.. 1 to 2 carats with the best cut possible is usually the best bet.. plus he should try to find out what shape diamonds she likes, or perhaps if you help by asking if there's any rings she's looked at it will help a great deal.. it shouldn't tip her off if you end up talking about it somehow..

For that price range, you will be able to get a nice about 1 carat. I have a 1.13 Carat princess cut, colorless (f),in a white gold band set in platinum, with and SI1 rating. These are all things you should be looking for. And mine was around $9,700

if I was him I would get her a mood ring, or a ring from a gumball machine and propose with that. That way she gets the whole down on one knee thing, and she gets to go pick out a ring that she really likes. She will be wearing it for the rest of her life, I think it is best if she gets some say in what it looks like.

By the way, who has definite the size of a wedding ring in order to show his sincerity? I would say he should discuss with her and go to choose one together. I think she will value it more because it is something which she has chosen the ring together with her loved one and it is something which suits to her taste. She will cherish it more than a ring which might cost more but chosen by someone else and which might not be of her choice.

It's not the size that matters, but what his current income is. The cost of an Engagement ring should be about two or three months of his gross income.
