In most states, the Department of Motor Vehicles will check for motor-vehicle-related warrants when renewing a driver's licence or identity card, or when issuing one for the first time.

However, most will only check their OWN state references - not those of other states ... unless they have an agreement with the neighbors, so to speak.

Since most states issue 'government identification' in the form of either a driver's licence or photo ID, and this is done at the DMV, the same checks will be made regardless of the ID type. The only other forms of government ID that I can recall offhand are either a military ID or passport, both of which are issued by the federal government ... and both of which WILL check for outstanding warrants in ALL states.

I don't know if the DMV checks for warrants or not. Where I live, it is possible to get a State ID card for non-drivers. The DMV issues those as well as Driver's Licenses. I doubt you would get around any DMV checks for ANY government issued ID.

I do not know about other states but in Texas they do. If you do not have an ID they will run your social # so they will find out if you have any out standing warrants. You can always go to where you get passports and get an ID there. My daughter did before she got her DL and it cost almost $30. Hope this helps!!!!
