Go to bookstore and find a good travel book. You didn't mention where she was going in Australia. It is a very big country with few and far between stops. A good travel book would let her know what was in the area and if it sounded good to her. She could plan some "must see" and some "see if you have time" One great thing the book would be good for is to identify places to eat. Some things seem strange such as Aussie Pies, but the good ones are really good and they come in a lot of flavors. It also would give her an idea of what was with travel distance to where she was and how to get there. Depending on where you are a train may only run every other day or so. That would be good to know before you get stuck at Alice Springs. It would also contain a lot of the tours available. It could be nice to have some billy tea from a true billy bong. Hope this helps.

They probably won't want anything that needs to be carried. What about tickets to something in Australia, e.g. the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb.

Sunscreen, a hat, and a t-shirt. Don't get caught in the sun.

Perhaps a small aussie slang dictionary, they're usually full of heaps of things we don't say, but some of it is used and it could be helpful.
