Because it shows their true nature. It shows that they think christianity is a warrior religion. Scary isn't it?

Some people seek god long and find the truth --Their Jesus said some swallow a camel yet have problems with nats--- The camel thing is middle east thing --YOU KNOW--So difficult not so --However easy Big problem---They say the fear of GOD is the beginning of knowledge--- Flip side --You do not fear GOD-- YOU KNOW NOTHING--- you never began in any knowledge--- Some garbage about having the hell scared out of you ---- Actual --their are no Christians in fox holes-- Why would they be scared --THEY GO STRAIGHT TO HEAVEN -- right-- At least it was not Vietnam --There were no atheist in the jungle there---They think you need GOD early Yet they think you can repent on you death bed -- How bout even if you an atheist-- You made peace with god in the desert'''

It looks like a handful of answerers here actually knew what it meant and gave the right definition... when your hiding from your enemy in a foxhole facing death, or, whatever the enemy might have in store for you, at one point you may have thought you were an athiest, but odds are 9 out of 10 of those athiests are suddenly praying hoping there really might be a God.
I think it's a metaphor for when your in danger in any situation really.
You may have remained an athiest greendonkey, but were you ever that close to death?...like in a foxhole type situation?

If you really want to know, the theory is that when your life is in imminent danger and you are scared and alone and have no one to talk to or ask for help and the situation is hopeless then in that desperate moment you will turn to God and ask for help....thereby no longer being an atheist.

I think we can all assume that you're talking about foxholes as in what soldiers dig into for protection when fighting in enemy territory.

Well, since Betty, Boop Oop A Doop felt the need to write me a personal message and call me an idiot I'll explain that you asked the question and I'm simply giving you the answer. I am not taking on the whole definition of atheists or arguing philosophical points. This is simply the reason that people say it.

It is a saying that was popular during WW II, and has hung around since. While not all soldiers are Christians, many decide to pray during combat, just in case. Also if you go to a prison many convicts once incarcerated become believers when they were not while they were out. As atheists become more numerous I am sure that the saying will die out.

It is another example of christian b/s propaganda. My father was an athiest and fought for 4 years in North Africa.

It is a known fact that often when a soldier gets seriously wounded he will probably call for his mother. Under the circumstances I am sure he would call for the Sphagetti Monster if he thought that would help.

BTW does that mean that all foxes are christian ?

I have never heard that before, but I would guess that atheists seems to snipe shot christians from their words, not their gunshots..... If atheists truly believe that there is no God or right or wrong, then why do they attack christians for believing what they do......it is at no harm to themselves for other people to believe in God, only their personal satisfaction that, yes, there is no God.....but that is probably why you do not like Christians, because they believe that there is a God. Contradiction, totatlly, but militant, how so? I have never heard that before....

Why must we be oppressed like those people three hundred or so years ago that gave up their citizenship to come to America to build a new land, free from religious prejudice and enjoy freedom. This is religious freedom from the Catholic rule that controlled much of England. Please read up on your history before before saying that christians say such things. I admire your war stories and status as a veteran, but this country was built on freedom, not atheism......read some history.....please

Well thank you for your service to me & our country,Sarge!
You will need to start believing in God though, because He won't let you into Heaven just for fighting bad guys!He kept you safe & didn't let you die out there.
If this was just all random,we would be as the animals.Just living to eat & mate.
We were given a soul & a will to do good or evil.We were given a guide to living in the form of the bible. This is a perfect guide.
It pains me to think that some ppl have nothing to look forward to after this life is over!My hope of Heaven keeps me going when all else fails! If there is no Heaven or God,or Jesus, well then,I have nothing to be afraid of & I have lived a good life.
In any case,I would rather be wrong & live for God,than wrong & have no hope!I lose nothing in the end.

This was an expression from the second World War. When you see your friends blown apart in front of your eyes and are scared s*itless, you are likely to start thinking about the afterlife, and praying gives you something to calm yourself with.

Each to his own though....

Thats why using absolutes like never and always is unwise because there is usually an exception.

Most people when they are close to dying unexpectedly (twice so far for me) try to make a deal with a higher power like God or their mother to save themselves.

A lot of atheists cry out in that situation. Who do you think they are calling out to?
