What you flush down the toilet goes to a place called a wastewater treatment plant. It is treated to remove all of the harmful material, and the water is discharged back into a body of water, usually a stream that is nearby the plant. The material that is removed from the water is disposed of in various ways, depending on the process that particular plant uses. Check with your local water utilities, you could probably get a tour of the plant if you are really interested.
