Hi I stayed at a hotel last night, and I accidently left a till receipt in the hotel room & checked out. The room wasnt booked in my name. The receipt had my card number as I made some purchases from Morrisons but I am not sure if it was the full card number on the receipt. Is it possible that the cleaner could find the receipt & make purchases on my card? Need to know what to do!

Most card processing systems block out all but the last 4 digits of the CC number. If the receipt has all of your details -- name, CC number, and expiration date it IS possible for someone to use it to charge something to your account.

I always check receipts. If the whole number is on it, I obliterate it and the expiration date so nobody can use it.

I think the risk is minimal. First the full number would have to be on the reciept which I doubt they are. Second the cleaner, who no doubt throws away thousands of old receipts and other bits of paper during the course of her working day, has to decide your receipt is of interest, and be dishonest enough to make use of that, and know what to do with the information.

Honestly, I wouldn't panic

Any receipts now only show the last 4 digits of 16 so don't worry.

a) most till receipts do not show a full card number. they usually blank out part ie: 4619 **** **** ****
b) the receipt would not show your pin or the 3 figure verification code
c) in the few cases where it has been an issue, i have found that the maid service is pretty honest.... Sure, I wouldn't bet my life on it, but I wouldn't be too worried

From your phrasing of the question, I think you should be more worried about someone finding out you stayed at that hotel last night......'.room wasn't booked in my name'....sounds dodgy....was the receipt for flowers, wine, durex etc. Hope you had a good time!!
