Uh, because it's toasting it. If you don't want it to do that, don't put your bread in the toaster.

Is it a good toaster?
I had an old one that started doing this and it wasn't getting hot enough and was sort of baking the bread as opposed to toasting it.
Fiddle with the setting see if you can make a difference, otherwise I think you may have to replace it, they are quite cheap to replace and worth it if you have overbaked bread that tastes like tree bark!!!
Good luck

This process is called dextrinization - the starch (i.e the bread) in the presence of dry heat (from toaster) is converted to pyrodextrins which is brown in colour, hence giving the brown to the bread. The bread becomes hard because the moisture content in the presence of heat is reduced, hence becomes hard

To troubleshoot:
Push down the lever like you would if you had bread in it. Then stick your hand in and see if the toaster turns your hand brown too.
If so, then you are still retarded.

If it is too hard and too brown .turn the setting on it down . The knob should be on the side if it is not look on the bottom. If it happens to not have a setting knob then you will have to stand and watch it and pop it up your self when it is as brown as you like it.

IF YOU CAN'T FIGURE HOW TO TURN YOUR SETTING DOWN,GIVE IT A MINUTE ,WITH THE SAME LEVER YOU POPPED IT DOWN, MANUALLY POP IT UP.IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU NEED A NEW TOASTER WITH DIRECTIONS !
