Are you all too familiar with that round little pouch you so lovingly nicknamed "tummy"? Wouldn't it be nice if you could just stare the fat away? Unfortunately, getting results requires a bit more work than focusing on the problem area. But with a few healthy guidelines you can zap the fat and end up with abs you're proud of.

Spot training is all the rage -- that is, zeroing in on a particular body part and working it to death for quick results. But if you do 150 sit-ups a day and still see no results, chances are you need to change what you eat. Sure your muscles are getting a workout, but not even that can counteract the fatty culprits you're consuming. For example, think about replacing that cold glass of milk with a delicious calcium-filled vegetable drink, like spinach, carrot and celery juice. You'll receive calcium and lots of healthy vitamins and minerals, like vitamin A (beta-carotene), iron and vitamin B12, without all the fat! It'll give you the boost you need to work those flabby abdominal muscles. Basically, the idea is to follow a low-fat, moderate-calorie diet.

You don't have to do 150 sit-ups to get the results you're looking for. It's not the amount you do, but the amount you do right. "Most people learn to do abdominal exercises the wrong way, " says Jeffrey Young, M.D., assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. "If your form is off, no matter how hard you work and how many repetitions you do, you're not getting the full benefit of the exercise."

Here are a couple of rules to follow from a trainer at Aerobic Spot Exercise Studio in London, Kentucky:

Always keep your back pressed into the floor and keep your pelvic area tight while you're performing the exercise. That means squeeze those muscles. If your abdominal muscles get too tired, you'll lose correct form. It's [more] important to do all the repetitions correctly than to do a whole bunch incorrectly. In other words, only eight reps done correctly is preferred over 24 reps [done] with incorrect form. When you start getting tired, stop.

The Trunk Curl

The position: Lay on your back, feet flat on the floor, knees apart, back pressed to the floor, pelvis tight, hands behind the head to support the head and neck.

The movement: Lift your chest toward the ceiling on counts 1, 2 and 3. Drop back on count 4.

Remember: Do not pull your head up with your hands. Let your abdominal muscles do the lifting. Exhale as your chest lifts toward the ceiling. Inhale on the way back down.

The Reverse Curl

The position: Lay on your back, legs extended toward the ceiling, arms resting by your sides or bent back over your head.

The movement: Lift (curl) your hips up off the floor. It's a small movement. Your legs are going straight up toward the ceiling. Do not allow momentum to do the lifting. Move slowly. Lift your hips for 2 counts, lower your hips for 2 counts.

Bicycling

The position: Lay on the floor with your back pressed to the surface. Bring one knee in toward your chest and extend the other leg.

The movement: Bicycle! Just like it sounds -- ride the imaginary bicycle.

Option: Add a shoulder rotation while bicycling (bring elbow to opposite knee with each rotation).

Start off with these, practice for the next 21 days, and you'll begin to see the payoff. Remember, this is between you and your abs. No one has to know, and you don't need an expensive membership to the gym. A healthy body is a healthy mind. Take care of it, and it will take care of you.

Yes, you can lose it by different ways. First off there are women who have had two or three children and lost their tummy pouch by doing abdominal exercises. There are numerous machines that will work for you. Also practise holding it in. People get slack and just let it all hang out so it stretches the muscles out of shape, so you need to get them back into shape. For my self I used a program called Body Flex and it worked well. However I do know the earlier you can deal with it the better. I am 77 this year and I know that when I was in my thirtys it was much easier to lose weight and inches then it is now.

You can't spot reduce; you need to reduce your overall bodyfat.

Do 30 minutes of cardio at least three times a week (run/walk/bike).

Cut back on the foods you eat with high fat and high sugar content. Try to eat only single servings (read the label) with less than 3g saturated fat and 3g sugars.

Eat breakfast, and eat five small meals per day instead of three big meals.

If you don't wake up starving, then you ate too much the day before.

Don't consume alcohol--alcohol is nothing more than empty calories with no nutritional value.

Get 6 to 8 hours of sleep every night (turn off the TV and the computer).

Good luck.

I have the same problem. I asked my gym teacher and physical therapist and they both said that 50 minutes of cardio to lose the fat and 10 minutes of core. One of the best exercises for the lower stomach is the 6 inches and one where you lay flat on your back, roll your feet up over your head (pretend you're going to touch your toes to the floor behind your head) and then slowly lower your legs to the floor. Keep your legs mostly straight. Once your heels touch slightly, kick off and repeat. Remember to hold your stomach tight. I have always been told to act as though I was pushing my belly button to the floor. Don't suck your stomach in. Try to eliminate the space between your lower back and the floor.

You don't. It is a natural occurence for women. Reverse crunches might strengthen your muscles on top of it and "hold it back," but as you get older, it will be harder to hide. Also, having children will exacerbate the problem. I am going to assume that because of your age, you have had at least one child.
