No they have been given a very bad wrap. The average murders that happen each year are in the thousands, only about 40 each year are by schizophrenics. Schizophrenics are often very withdrawn, timid and very safe people, at times when having delusions or hallucinations of forms they can get confused about a situation of what is really going on, some are dangerous but that number is few and you must always separate the person from the illness.

The media will give them a bad wrap in newspapers in movies pretty much anyway they can, so much information is twisted and we eat it all up.
Schizophrenia affects about 3 million Americans and you probably haven't even noticed when you have met a few medicated or unmedicated at times depending on their state of mind.
It's not something society is taught about, it's still kept in the dark for the reason that movies have done a great job as showing them as dangerous people and so many people think it is MPD (multiple personality disorder) that is how uneducated society is because movies who have poorly portrayed this mental illness has made it hard for people to talk about it due to others judging so quickly.
People need to be better educated, out of all the schizophrenics I have met never have any been angry or violent I have always found regular people to be more that way than anything.

I worked withthe care of schizophrenics for 5 years and was only ever under threat once. Not all take their medication even when they are supposedly supervised. Some had at times to be restrained and injecred with nedication to reduce their volatility.
Generally though I found many interesting and quite entertaining to talk with. I always treated them as if they were quite normal and not freaks or somone to be afraid of. However, one must always be careful in what you say in low tones or just out of hearing range for those who have paranoia.
There have been incidences of staff being attacked, but on refelection it was mostly their lack of observation of the basic rules of caring for such persons.

Medication, combined understanding, empathy and a good listening ear are the treatments of chgioce in caring for anyone with this affliction. Many of our patients were allowed weekend leave and also many were discharged back into the community to return to their previous lives. It was only the criminal schizophrenics which were retained. But even some of those were just like ordinary people on most days. Talkative, sociable and aimable.
I found more people on the outside to be mad and violent than those in the institution I worked in.

So the answer is generally no, to both your questions

No. People with schizophrenia are not any more dangerous than the general population. If anything they can be more dangerous to themselves. Sometimes schizophrenic patients who have severe persecutory delusions and/or command auditory hallucinations, and are not taking medication, may react violently.

Well... let's see... dangerous? Sometimes.

Mean and violent? Sometimes.

It really depends on a lot of factors. That's why they can be scary - because you just don't know.... and they don't know either...

Imagine what you would be like if you had the voice of God whispering things in your ear all the time... or if you were convinced that you are Joan of Arc and everyone is trying to burn you... would you smile and wish everyone a nice day?

If they haven't taken their medications or haven't seeked medical attention then they could be dangerous... That's only severe cases though. Schizophrenics can be just like regular people who can function almost just as well as a regular person. They can be sweet.

Well, the Doctor of Psychology, at College, spoke of them as if they were normal. Also, schizopherinia is basically just a hightened sense of awareness.

You ever sense something that wasn't there? Like a sound or a smell? Well don't tell the head shrinks or they will 'prescribe' that you pay them a vast fortune...... It has to be remembered- the moment everyone is, 'well' then the shrinks stop getting paid. 'schizopherinia' would disapear tomorrow if we just stoped paying them.

They are dissillusioned, so possibly yes. Imagine a person on drugs, who's having a distorted perception of reality - this is similar to what schizophrenic people are dealing with constantly. The difference is schizoids take drugs to bring themselves in-line with reality, where-as drug users take drugs to become dissillusioned.
