If this is the routine it may be a cyclical or hormonal depression. Is this person depressed about anything specific?

It could be a number of different things. Like other's have mentioned, could be Bi-polar or could also be anxiety, which can be confused as depression.
There is also the chance that it's just depression, not known by any other word. Everyone suffers from depression at some time, sometimes longer than others. So it is hard to say, whether it should be taken as a problem or not. If it is on going, like the same routine of the on off, on off then I would say that it is a disorder such as chronic depression, bi-polar or anxiety.

Bi-polar..... It's up one month and down the whole next month. Poor things.... As t-bone says, it is often confused with anxiety..... If someone's got anxiety then just run a lot. Or do any type of gymnastics etc.- Exercise.
And most people have suffered anxiety at some stage. If not all.

anxiety has always been a on off problem with most people
it is confused with many other symptoms but when recognized
it becomes control able. . when you get an anxiety attack try and remember it by writing down what you were doing and what you were thinking about,
it will help you understand it .
as we age it becomes more prevalent , but i would suggest you see your Doc. its just a fact of life and sometimes a simple explanation by a professional and their understanding makes it easier to deal with.
